Obama takes on the Education establishment

A couple of interesting pieces on education and Obama’s seeming willingness to not only take on the teachers’ unions but to back school choice as as well:

I like where this is going. Having a hard time believing it, frankly, but I do like where this is going.

This is historic and unprecedented. Democrats NEVER take on unions or the causes that unions hold dear, especially those as big, powerful, and entrenched as the teachers’ unions. And there are good reasons for that, as you might imagine. But Obama, for some strange and exciting reason, is ready to upset that apple cart.

Hoo-ah!

“In 2008 the graduation rate for voucher students was 77% versus 65% for the nonvoucher students, though the latter receives $14,000 per pupil in taxpayer support, or more than double the $6,400 per pupil that voucher students receive in public funding.”

‘What Works’ in Education: Vouchers - WSJ.com

They’ve been using vouchers in Milwaukee for twenty years now, and it seems to be working pretty well: higher graduation rates at much lower cost. And *all* voucher program kids are low-income, while some public school kids are not.

So is our educational system about educating the future of our country, or is it about something else?
